The Otter Trail is the most popular and well known of the South African hiking trails and is widely regarded as one of the finest in the world. The trail starts close to Tamodi and traverses the scenic Eastern Cape coastline from Storms River Mouth to Natures Valley in the Tsitsikamma National Park.
The trail is 42,5kms long and takes 5 days to complete. 4 nights are spent in comfortable huts with amazing views. The route is located entirely within the Tsitsikamma National Park, which protects an 80 km long strip of coastal mountains, forest and beaches. The trail never strays far from the spectacular shoreline but often climbs steeply and then descends to the beach or a river crossing. Beautiful vegetation such as fynbos, dense indeginous forest and wildflowers abound.
It is necessary to book a place on the Otter Trail well in advance, find out more here.
Another option for the extremely fit trail runners out there is the Otter Trail Run. It is run over the same route as The Otter hiking trail but has to be done within the maximum time of 8 hours!
